The bubbles that provide the cushioning for fragile or sensitive objects are generally available in different sizes, depending on the size of the object being packed, as well as the level of cushioning protection needed. Multiple layers may be needed to provide shock and vibrationisolation while a single layer may simply be used as a surface protective layer. Bubble wrap is also used to form some types of mailing envelopes.

Bubble wrap is most often formed from polyethylene (LDPE) film with a shaped side bonded to a flat side to form air bubbles. Some types of bubble wrap have a lower permeation barrier film to allow longer useful life and resistance to loss of air in vacuums.

The bubbles can be as small as 6 millimetres (0.24 inches) in diameter, to as large as 26 millimetres (1.0 inch) or more, to provide added levels of shock absorption during transit. The most common bubble size is 1 centimeter.^{[citation needed]} In addition to the degree of protection available from the size of the air bubbles in the plastic, the plastic material itself can offer some forms of protection for the object in question. For example, when shipping sensitive electronic parts and components, a type of bubble wrap is used that employs an anti-static plastic that dissipates static charge, thereby protecting the sensitive electronic chips from static which can damage them.

Uses of this versatile material are more than one can imagine. It can be utilized as an emergency sleeping bag or floating device, entertaining foot mats for kids, protecting outdoor plants from snow, safeguarding electronics from abrasion and insulating dog houses as well. The primary purpose of bubble wrap is to provide extra protection from surface pressure and mishandling the object and to prevent it from getting scratched. It offers a marvelous cover for fragile items that have to encounter adverse conditions to reach its destination in one piece. Bubble wraps have become an extremely significant packaging material to transport valuable objects easily.

Polycell’s range of Air Bubble products are made from a carefully formulated blend of virgin low density and linear low density resins along with various additives for performance purposes.  Polycell’s standard Air Bubble range consists of 4 bubble profiles as indicated in the following table. After more than 2 years in development, Polycell is pleased and excited to announce the pending release of our environmentally friendly ‘Oxo-B Eco Bubble’.

Oxo-B Eco Bubble incorporating ‘Reverte’ Oxo-biodegradable masterbatch is the result of running numerous trials using a wide range of additives over a long period of time.

We settled on the use of Reverte as the end result in the degradation process of our products far outweighs that of some like products that currently exist in the market place.

Incorporating ‘Reverte’ Oxo-biodegradable additives into our polyethylene resins will ensure that once Eco Bubble’s useful life is over and it has been discarded into a rubbish tip or landfill it will degrade (crack) and finally breakdown into smaller pieces with the aid of UV light, oxygen and or heat.
