The three carton-sealing chemistries
Hot melt grabs fast and holds hard β the production-line choice, best for recycled-content cartons and automatic case sealers. Acrylic resists UV and temperature swings, stays clear for years and seals quietly β best for storage and freezer environments (down to 0Β°F). Natural rubber sticks to dusty, dirty or very cold cartons when nothing else will. We stock all three on the carton sealing tape page, from 1.7 mil utility to 3.1 mil heavy-duty.
Water-activated (gummed) paper tape
Reinforced gummed paper tape bonds into the carton fiber, creating a tamper-evident seal that won't pop in cold or dusty conditions β and it's the e-commerce favorite because it's recyclable with the box and looks premium. It needs a dispenser, which pays for itself in tape savings on volume.
Bundling, strapping and specialty
Filament tape with fiberglass reinforcement replaces light strapping for bundling pipe, lumber and palletized boxes (some grades over 300 lb tensile). For HVAC and sealing applications use UL-listed foil tapes; for clean-removal staging and events use gaffer's tape; paint prep takes masking tape in widths from 1/2" to 2".
Mil thickness and the 3-strip rule
For cartons under 30 lbs, a single strip of 1.7β2.0 mil tape seals fine. 30β65 lb boxes want 2.5β3.1 mil. Over that β or for high-value contents β use the H-pattern: one strip along the seam, one across each edge. If tape keeps popping, the fix is usually chemistry (hot melt on recycled cartons), not more layers.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between hot melt and acrylic packing tape?
Hot melt has stronger instant adhesion and holding power β best for case sealers and recycled cartons. Acrylic handles temperature extremes and UV better, stays clear longer, and is quieter to unwind β best for freezer storage and long-term sealing.
Is water-activated paper tape better than plastic tape?
For e-commerce and tamper-evidence, usually yes: gummed paper tape bonds into the carton fiber, seals through dust and cold, recycles with the box, and one strip replaces two or three of plastic. It does require a dispenser.
What mil packing tape should I use?
1.7β2.0 mil seals cartons under 30 lbs. Use 2.5β3.1 mil for 30β65 lb boxes, and add an H-pattern seal (seam plus both edges) for heavy or high-value shipments.
